MAYOR RUSSELL HERNANDEZ

Mayor Russell Hernandez is a proud fourth-generation resident of our town, deeply rooted in its rich history and vibrant community. As CEO & co-business owner (Salud! Restaurant), he understands the unique challenges and opportunities that local enterprises face and is committed to fostering a thriving economic environment. With a passion for preserving our town's heritage while embracing growth and innovation, Mayor Hernandez works tirelessly to ensure that our community remains a welcoming and prosperous place for all. In addition to his mayoral duties, Russell enjoys outdoor recreation and actively participates in community events. He values spending time with his children (and significant others), recognizing them as the upcoming generation and future of our town. His involvement in nonprofit work reflects his dedication to supporting both the community and local businesses, making him a trusted and respected leader. TRUSTEE STEPHANIE JOHNSON-BURICK

Trustee Stephanie Johnson-Burick is six generations from Mesilla and is currently serving her second term as an elected official. She is the great-great-great granddaughter of Colonel Albert Jennings Fountain and her great-grandfather, Albert J. Fountain, served as the first mayor of Mesilla. Trustee Johnson-Burick received her undergraduate degrees from New Mexico State University in Criminal Justice and Psychology and has of Master of the Arts in Education. She is currently employed with Doña Ana County as a Recruiter and Trainer. She is committed to serving the residents of this community and doing so with transparency, ethics and integrity. TRUSTEE GERARD NEVAREZ

Gerard “Jerry” Nevarez has been involved with the Town of Mesilla for approximately eight years. He served on the Town’s Planning, Zoning and Historical Appropriateness Commission and was elected Trustee in the November 2023 election. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Public Administration degrees from New Mexico State University. He has held varied positions in the public sector. He served as Assistant Area Director with the NM Department of Labor (now Workforce Solutions), EEO and Training Officer with the City of Las Cruces and Executive Director with the NMSU Office of Institutional Equity. His family roots run deep in Mesilla. During his tenure as Trustee, he would like to focus on preservation (both structural and cultural), community wellbeing/quality of life issues, responsiveness and transparency.
